commonisms I Common Ground, University of Sheffield, UK

commonisms (words projection, tape 2016) was the very initial piece in the series also entitled Commonisms, exhibited at AHRA Common Ground exhibition at the University of Sheffield. Prompted by the play-on-words commons/communism the exhibition visitors were asked to respond with their own associations with the word communism. Predictably, most initial response included words such as gulag and brutalist tower block, but then more unusual choices and even humorous ones started to appeared such as “common aileen”… All of their words were later input into the computer and projected onto a silver tape cube creating an illusion of three dimensional space.
